How Relevant is Google's Personalized Search?

Which search engine REALLY gives you the results you're looking for?

With Google in the news so much lately regarding their attempts to personalize your search experience, I thought it would be fun to test out just how relevant their search results are to my needs.

Before I get into it, though, I wanted to warn everyone about a little thing I noticed the other day.  I was in my Gmail account reading emails.  I looked over to the right side of the page at the "featured" advertisements, and noticed that the ads were surprisingly related to the content of the email I was reading.

At the top of the ads, there was a link in small print that says "Why these ads?"  When I clicked on it, a small window opened.  I tried to get a screen shot of it but when I hit Alt-prtscrn the little box disappeared.  What it said was "These ads are based on emails from your mailbox. Visit Google’s Ads Preferences Manager to learn more, block specific advertisers, or opt out of personalized ads."

I didn't like the sound of that so I went to the Ads Preferences Manager and found this:

"How ads are personalized on Gmail
When we personalize ads, we display ads based on the contents of all your emails. For example, if you've recently received lots of messages about photography or cameras, we might show you a deal from a local camera store. In your inbox, we might also show you ads related to information from different emails in your inbox. We show you these ads on Gmail depending on your preferences in the Ads Preferences Manager. Read more about this in the section be low."

So unless you opt out of all personalization, Google will be screening your emails to find content that matches their advertiser's wares.

And you thought your email was private!

Ok, back to the original topic.  How "relevant" is Google's personalized search?

Thought I'd start simple.  Suppose you wanted to read my latest blog post, but you didn't bookmark the blog (and why not??) and you couldn't remember the URL.  So you type Collectible Corner blog into the search box.  Since I'm searching for myself and the Google search is supposedly personalized, you'd  think my blog would be near the top of search results.

Not so!  You'll find my Facebook page with a reference to my blog.  If I click on that link I get part of my facebook page with an error message.  There are also images that belong to me, pulled from Picasa, which were posted to another blog of mine NOT Collectible Corner.  What you won't find is the blog itself, at least not in the first 10 pages.  Since Blogger is a google product, you'd think they'd rank it fairly high.

So what happens if I do the same search using Bing?  Page 1, first two entries.

Yahoo search?  Page 1 again.

Google fails!  If I type in Collectible Corner, give me that BEFORE you give me Collector's Corner!  Bing and Yahoo both gave me what I was looking for, but not Google.

I don't want this blog post to get overlong, but I'll do one more search. 

Just yesterday I listed a Limoges plate, Alice in Wonderland Alice and the Mad Hatter.  I didn't think I'd get much from search since I just listed it yesterday, but when I search Bing there I am on page 1 of search results!

Same with Yahoo!

But Google?  Nope.  Not in the first 10 pages.


I spend a great deal of time trying to placate the Google gods when I'm creating my listings.  More than half of the traffic that comes to my Bonanza booth does so through Google.  But when I search, I get better results by far from Bing and Yahoo.


So what does this very unscientific 1-person experiment mean?   Maybe you'll find more relevant search results from alternate search engines.  I find myself using Bing more and more because I don't get irrelevant results as often as I do on Google.

Merry Christmas from Collectible Corner!

Fuzzle waits for Santa Claus

 The shopping is done, the presents are wrapped, the baking is complete ... time to relax and enjoy the holiday!

This year's disaster!  Before we constructed a barrier.

At our house, the cats enjoy the season as much as we do - for very different reasons!  This year we had to transition to a tabletop tree so that little Fuzzle wouldn't climb it.  He did some serious damage to our 7-foot tree last year!  And this year was looking equally disastrous until we piled the wrapped presents around the tree.  He's quite disappointed that he can't get under there and knock the darn thing over, but I'm thrilled not to have to re-decorate every couple of days like I did last year.

This is my favorite time of year.  Finding the perfect gift for everyone I love, baking goodies to share with the elderly couple down the street, selecting toys for the annual toy drive, digging for change to put in Santa's red kettle outside the store ... to me its all about the giving.  Like the reborn Scrooge, I try to keep Christmas in my heart all year but as the holiday grows closer its somehow amplified.  

This year, I gave myself a gift.  If you've visited before, you'll notice that my blog has been redesigned.  Thanks to the very talented Monique of CleosFleaMarket on Bonanza, I now have more ways to share with you.  If you hover over the "My Stores" tab at the top, you'll see three choices.  Click on any of them, and it will let you view that store without ever leaving this blog.  Not a link, but the actual store available for your browsing pleasure right here on my blog.  The other tabs give me more room to share information with you, so I don't have to try to crowd everything onto one page.  I hope you enjoy the new experience!

Both the joy and the downside to being an online business is that you spend most of every day alone in your home in front of your computer.  I'm blessed to have found Bonanza three years ago, whose community is one that embraces its members and treats them like family.  We give each other encouragement and support.  We rally around those who become ill, or suffer losses;  we join in the celebration when a seller reaches a personal milestone; we send each other Christmas cards and partake in that classic workplace event, Secret Santa.  We become friends somehow, despite the impersonal and sterile atmosphere of the internet.  

I'm proud and pleased to be a member of the Bonanza community.  I hope you'll remember us when you're on the hunt for unique collectibles, as well as gifts, fashion accessories, hand crafted items and so much more!

But today's post isn't about trying to sell you anything.  From the bottom of my heart, I want to wish you all a very happy, joyous, Merry Christmas!

Free Shipping Friday 12/16 Don't Miss It!

Collectible Corner

On Friday, December 16, nearly 1,900 online merchants both large and small will be participating in a Free Shipping Day.  For last minute shoppers concerned about getting gifts in time for Christmas, the majority of the free shipping deals will be for expedited shipping.  

Merchants are asked to guarantee delivery in time for the holiday, but a little caveat here - while the merchants will do everything in their power to get your items to you fast, no one can guarantee that the post office will do their part.  So while it's unlikely that a package will arrive late, remember that ultimately it's up to the carrier to get it to you in time.  As long as the merchant ships right away and uses an expedited service, they've done  their part to keep the delivery promise.

Just 2 More Online Shopping Weeks Till Christmas!

Now's the time to surf for deals!  When you purchase from small sellers at online marketplaces such as Bonanza, you're supporting small business in a big way.  Many of these sellers are doing this to earn a living, not just to supplement existing incomes.  And they work hard at their job, doing their utmost to provide a good product at good prices.  But customer service is probably their greatest asset!  They want you to come back often, and will usually go out of their way to insure that you're happy with your purchase.

Worried about whether it will arrive in time for your holiday?  Want something shipped direct to the recipient?  When you find the perfect gift, don't hesitate to contact the seller prior to purchase to see if they can accommodate your needs.  Many will do whatever they can to make sure your holiday is hassle-free.

Collectibles for Christmas? Support Small Businesses and Score Great Finds!

Can you believe it's that time of year already?  While big retailers got a very early start (I saw the first Christmas-themed commercial on tv way back on October 15!), and will be competing for your holiday shopping dollars in big ways, you might want to consider supporting small businesses instead this year.

Sellers in the online marketplace are gearing up for the holiday shopping season with special deals, discounts and free shipping to lure you in.  You can avoid the malls, shop in your jammies and get great deals on unique gifts that will be appreciated and remembered long after the holiday is over.

No big secret that my favorite marketplace is Bonanza.   If you haven't shopped there before, don't be turned away by the fashion-centric home page.  Trust me, there's a ton of great collectibles on this site that boasts "Everything but the Ordinary".  In the next few weeks I'll share with you some of my favorite sellers and their unique wares.  Hopefully you'll find the perfect gifts for your friends and family!

Brad Peterson's Glass Art  is the place to go for unique, one-of-a-kind glass jewelry and art.  I've made a few purchases from Brad over the last couple of years.  The pendants always get compliments when I wear them, and deservedly so - beautifully crafted, they are wearable pieces of art.  My most recent purchase, which I just received yesterday, is a stunning sandblasted piece  that was created from a photo I sent him.  This girl was my husband's favorite cat, and she'll be a gift to him for Christmas this year. I can't wait for him to open it on Christmas morning!

Brad creates and sells everything from Bookmarks and keychains, necklaces,  and drop-dead gorgeous wall art, bowls and vases.  His customer service is exceptional, he ships quickly and BONUS!  He's a great guy.

New Millenium Beatnik sells an eclectic mix of items.  My favorites are her own jewelry and ornament creations.  The ornaments are created from re-puposed vintage jewelry findings and each is a unique work of art.  I own a few of them, and they sparkle on my tree!  Perfect for gifting to anyone just starting out and making their own holiday traditions.

Can Jewelry be Collectible? Of Course!

When I think of collectibles, jewelry isn't the first thing that comes to mind.  Or the second, or third, or ... you get the idea.  But sales of vintage and antique pieces have stayed strong during the recession, and I'm one of those buyers.  Vintage pieces from Coro, Eisenberg and the like are beautifully designed and the materials they were made from are in my opinion far superior to what is used in the construction of costume jewelry today.

What REALLY intrigues me, though, and where I spend the bulk of my bling allowance, is the artistic, one of a kind hand crafted jewelry that has become so widely available thanks to sites like Etsy and Bonanza.  There are some extremely talented jewelry artists out there, and they are crafting some amazing collectible one of a kind pieces.

A subset of those artisans are those who re-purpose vintage pieces, utilizing materials from the past to  craft beautiful, new and unique items..  I've only recently  come to appreciate their efforts, and the more I see the more I love them.

I received this beauty as a gift recently.  Titled "The Queen of Bronze", created by Bonanza seller Cutethings6 I adore this necklace!  From what she calls her "Newtiques" collection, Laurie at Cutethings6 recycled a piece of a chocolate bronze stone  framed in gold with a crown on top and clear rhinestone, and layered it with a Vintage chunk of wood, and 2 filigree pieces. One is gold and one is bronze.  She then hung threaded wood beads and gold spacers, then attached them to a bronze link chain with a lobster clasp. 

I received the necklace as a "Secret Santa" gift, and since I had put it on my Bonanza "Wish List" I knew who the seller was. I contacted her right away to thank her for such a beautiful piece.  A nicer person you won't find!  I'm glad I took the time to drop her a note, not only did I get a stunning piece of jewelry but I made a new friend!

She calls the product line "Newtiques", a blending of new and antique/vintage items, artfully put together to make a one of a kind piece.  She has a unique talent that I can't help but appreciate.  Here are a couple of other pieces she currently has listed in her Bonanza booth:
